About Us

At our school, we offer a unique and innovative way to learn.  We teach our 13 children in one class, aged Reception to Year 6, with our team of two enthusiastic, cutting edge teachers and our Higher Level Teaching Assistant.  Our environment has been designed into ‘areas of learning’, where our children, no matter what their age or stage, are encouraged to be independent learners and have access to a wide range of open-ended and self-accessible resources.

Children move freely between the two indoor classrooms to use resources that will promote and motivate their own learning; whether that be using the water tray to learn about capacity and volume, the small world and role play area to inspire their imagination to innovate their writing, or a plethora of maths equipment to investigate a practical and real-life approach to mathematics.  This extends fluidly into our covered Outdoor Learning Zone where children, particularly in Foundation Stage, are encouraged to continue exploring and discovering; perhaps through the use of our mini greenhouse or mark making area on easels and in the sand.

We believe that children should be given every opportunity to be curious, to explore their understanding, to ask their own questions and to evaluate their beliefs and interpretations through hands-on, open-ended enquiry.  Our third classroom, our fantastic forest, develops this further and is a space on our doorstep that we use regularly to enrich imaginations, logical thinking, understanding and appreciation of the world, and fully enhances our children’s curriculum.

We are incredibly fortunate that we have an amazing outdoor space: a fully equipped playground and a beautiful school playing field which overlooks the stunning scenery that Arkengarthdale has to offer.  We endeavour to allow our children to help to maintain these areas, planting a herb garden and willow arches to make it an exciting experience in which to play and learn.

Our wholesome environment not only allows our children to experience the best of a creative, cross-curricular curriculum aimed at inspiring their curiosity and delving into the broad questions that intrigue them, but also offers them the opportunity to challenge themselves and discover that their ceilings are never too high.
